PLN & Public Communications & Digital Identity
We are living in a digital age where social media has spread virally, regardless of who you are or where you live. In this broader context, reflecting on the meaning of social media and developing an understanding of digital identity has become especially important.
First, the first question worth discussing is: what are social media and digital identity? I believe social media is a playing field where everyone has the opportunity and the platform to share their lives, while digital identity is the âentry ticketâ that each of us must have in order to participate. Through digital identity, everyone can both take part and present themselves. It carries human values, lifestyles, personal interests, and social trends. For example, I use Instagram every day to post and share my daily meals and activities.
Secondly, why do we participate in public networks such as social media? In my view, the most important reason is that it significantly lowers the cost of human connection. Humans are social beings who need interaction and communication to gain social recognition, and online platformsâwithout the limitations of location or distanceâgreatly increase the efficiency of communication. At the same time, social media provides people with opportunities to participate in society and stay informed about current events, allowing individuals to explore the meaning of life and discover forms of entertainment that suit them.
Of course, participating in public networks also involves risks. A highly visible environment can create privacy and safety concerns. For example, cyberbullying is a typical issue. As the cost of connection is lowered, almost everyone can participate in commenting on online events, and with the added feature of anonymity, victims often lose their ability to protect themselves. In addition, high exposure on social media may make individuals more vulnerable to harm or exploitation by malicious actors. Therefore, I believe it is important to learn how to participate in public networks responsibly by controlling our online behavior and protecting our privacy, so that we can maximize the benefits of social media.
